Professor Daniel attended the National Technical University of Athens, Greece; he received B.S., M.S., and Ph. D. degrees from the Illinois Institute of Technology. Prior to his appointment at Northwestern University, he was Professor and Director of the Mechanics of Materials Laboratory at the Illinois Institute of Technology, and Science Advisor of the IIT Research Institute (IITRI).

His research encompasses many areas of mechanics and materials with emphasis on experimental mechanics and composite materials. In the latter, he has worked on all aspects of the area including processing, micromechanics, characterization, fracture and damage mechanics, nondestructive evaluation, and life prediction. He has pioneered test methods for characterization of polymer, ceramic, and metal matrix composites. In recent years he has been working on processing, characterization, and modeling of polymer/clay and polymer/graphite nanocomposites.

He serves on the editorial boards of Composites Part A, Strain, and the Journal of Composite Materials. He is a Fellow of the Society for Experimental Mechanics (SEM), the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), and the American Academy of Mechanics (AAM). He has received many awards including the William M. Murray Medal from SEM, and the Distinguished Research Award from the American Society for Composites.

He is a co-inventor of three patents and two pending ones. He has lectured at home and abroad; is the author of over 350 publications and nine chapters of books; co-author of a monograph entitled "Experimental Mechanics of Fiber Reinforced Composite Materials," and a widely used textbook entitled "Engineering Mechanics of Composite Materials," now in its second edition.
